The trip from Rio to Búzios is the part of the holiday nobody plans. It is also the part that decides how the first day feels. Leave the airport at ten on a Tuesday and you are in our pool by early afternoon, wondering why the map made it look far. Leave the city at four on a Friday before a holiday and you will still be on the bridge at five. We have made this trip more times than we can count, from both airports, by car and by bus. We get asked about it before almost every stay, and this is the answer we give, with what each option costs this month. The short answer. Rio to Búzios is about 175 kilometres and three hours door to door. There are four real ways. The Viação 1001 bus from about R$83. An Uber for about R$353 to R$510, booked ahead. A transfer, from R$147 a person shared or R$490 a car private. Or your own car, with R$25 to R$48 in tolls. Which one is right depends less on money than on the day and hour you leave.

When you leave matters more than how
Here is the thing the ranking guides skip. Every option lands within the same three-to-four-hour window on a normal day. So the real variable is traffic, and the traffic has a schedule. The company that runs the Via Lagos toll road publishes its own forecasts. Before a holiday weekend the outbound peak is Friday from 3 pm to 5 pm. At Carnival it moves to Saturday between 2 pm and 8 pm, with more than fifty thousand cars on that one road in a day. The return peak is Monday from 9 am, or Ash Wednesday from 5 am to 1 pm. The road averages 19,000 cars a day and 52,000 on a peak day.
So the rule is simple. Travel mid-morning on a weekday when you can. If your dates are fixed to a holiday, leave Rio before lunch on the Thursday, or after the Saturday rush. Come back on the Tuesday. Guests who have sat in the seven-hour version of this trip do not make the same mistake twice. The toll road’s own traffic feed updates every twenty minutes, and it is worth a look before you get in the car.
One more rule, from every local who has answered this question online: do not drive it after dark. “There are no lights on the roads,” says an Ipanema resident who has done the trip over twenty times. A late flight into Rio means a night in the city and the road in the morning.

The bus from Rio to Búzios
The bus is the honest bargain, and the one most guests underrate. Viação 1001 runs eleven to fifteen departures a day from the Novo Rio terminal. The first leaves just after five in the morning, the last at half past nine at night. The classes matter more than the times. Convencional is the basic seat, executivo has more room, and leito reclines almost flat. On 13 September 2026 the fares ran from R$93 for the six o’clock convencional to R$179 for the leito. The quickest run, the 10:04, was scheduled at three hours ten minutes. Buses have air conditioning, a toilet, wifi and power sockets. Busbud prices the same seats at US$19 to US$36.
Two things people learn the hard way. Tickets go on sale about thirty days ahead, so an empty search two months out means nothing is wrong. Foreign cards fail on some Brazilian sites, so buy through ClickBus, which takes them. Get to Novo Rio by Uber, not on foot. The streets around the terminal are not the part of Rio you came to see.
If you are landing at Galeão, skip the terminal altogether. Three 1001 buses a day leave straight from the airport, at 09:20, 11:20 and 15:20, for R$117 to R$127, boarding at Terminal 2 arrivals. Four hours, no changes, and you are in Búzios for dinner.
The bus arrives at the Búzios terminal on Estrada da Usina Velha 444, a ten-minute walk from the centre. From there, order an Uber. A ride across town runs R$15 to R$22, and the taxis waiting at the stop are known for quoting more.
Uber from Rio to Búzios
The most-asked question on every forum is whether an Uber driver will really take a three-hour job. They will, and Uber now sells it as a route. The company’s own averages are about R$353 from the city and R$510 from Galeão, about three hours twenty minutes on the road. A Rio local’s advice in the thread everyone finds is the right advice. Book it with Uber Reserve, so a driver has agreed before you land. Ask for a time after 9 am to miss the rush hour and the surge. Pick Comfort or Black, because three hours in a basic car is a long time. One traveller in that thread pre-booked from Copacabana and was at the door in three hours ten.
The catch is the way back. Búzios has far fewer drivers, so the return averages about R$653, nearly double. A driver can be hard to find on a Sunday afternoon. Book the return the day you arrive, or ask us for a driver, which is what most of our guests end up doing.
Rio to Búzios transfer: a shared van or a private car
A transfer is a car or van that comes to you. The shared kind is the cheapest door-to-door option and the least loved. Prices run from about R$147 a person to R$380, with Gray Line from US$45 and fixed departures from the airports at 11 am, 3 pm and 9 pm. The reason people grumble is the pickup round. A van that collects six hotels in Copacabana before the bridge turns a three-hour trip into five. The reviews on the big booking sites say so. For one person with bags it is still a fair deal. For two, an Uber costs about the same and leaves when you do.
A private transfer is the family answer. One car, your name on a sign at arrivals. The driver tracks the flight, and the toll is in the price. Conexão Búzios lists a sedan for four from R$600 and an SUV for six from R$950; Kiwitaxi sells the Galeão run from US$128 for four; a local operator starts at R$490 for four to six people. Driving yourself
The drive is easy once you are out of Rio. From either airport you follow the Linha Vermelha expressway to the Rio-Niterói bridge. Then the BR-101 north, the Via Lagos toll road (the RJ-124) east to the coast, and the last stretch on the RJ-106 into Búzios. Distance is about 170 to 190 kilometres depending on where you start. Two and a half hours with empty roads, three to three and a half on a normal day. A Búzios innkeeper on the same forum calls it “an easy drive of about two and a half hours”. She adds that the route is quick rather than scenic, which is true.
The tolls, as of September 2026: the bridge is R$6.60, and the Via Lagos is R$18.40 on weekdays or R$30.60 from Friday noon to Monday noon and around holidays. Fuel is roughly R$85 to R$130 each way. A small rental at Galeão averages about R$97 a day in the off season and more in summer. Keep a card and some cash for the booths; most take Pix and cards now, not all.
Do you need the car once you are here? Only if you want the far beaches on your own clock. Búzios is a peninsula where an Uber across town is R$15 to R$22, and parking near the centre is the worst part of owning a car here in high season. Most of our guests who drive use the car for the beach days and take Ubers at night.
Galeão or Santos Dumont
Fly into Galeão (GIG) if you have the choice. It is the international airport, on the north side of the city and the right side for the bridge. It is also the only airport with a direct bus to Búzios. Uber from there averages R$510. Santos Dumont (SDU) is the small downtown airport for domestic flights. It is lovely to land at. But every trip to Búzios from there crosses the city centre first, the one part of this drive locals complain about.
Flying to Cabo Frio, and the boat
There are no scheduled flights from Rio to the coast. Cabo Frio airport (CFB), about forty minutes from Búzios, gets seasonal flights from elsewhere. Azul flies from Belo Horizonte for the summer of 2026 to 2027. LATAM flies from São Paulo Guarulhos four times a week from December 2026. Charters come from Argentina in high season. If you are coming from São Paulo or Buenos Aires, that is worth checking. From Cabo Frio a taxi to our door runs about an hour, and Uber under R$60.
The boat you see advertised is not a boat from Rio. It is a bus day trip with a schooner ride once you get here. Twelve hours or more, rated around three and a half stars by the people who took it. Búzios is not a day trip. Come for three nights and take the schooner from the town beach on your own schedule.
What we see from the house
Our own numbers, since nobody else has them. Most of our guests land at Galeão and come by private car, and we arrange the driver when you book. Amanda, who stayed with us in December 2023, changed her flights to Rio the day before. She wrote: “She introduced us to Igor, who is a Búzios native. He picked us up at the airport, brought us straight to the house, where Antonia was waiting there with the key and a tour of the home.” That is the version of this trip we like best. Someone with your name at arrivals, and the keys in your hand three hours later.
Once you are here, the car question answers itself. Ferradurinha beach is 8 minutes down the hill on foot, Geribá 13, and Rua das Pedras is a 6 minute drive. Toby, who stayed in 2019, put it in one line: “easy to get everywhere with Uber.” Two cars fit in the driveway if you do rent one, and the road up to the house is paved.

Three hours is the right distance. Far enough that Rio lets go of you somewhere around the bridge. Close enough that you are swimming before the day is over. Pick a weekday morning if you can, book the ride before you land, and let the first afternoon be slow.
